About us

HOW IT BEGAN

Since 1966, Father Michael Shea, C.Ss.R. and other Redemptorists have cared for poor people living in the northeast areas of Thailand. Their work centred on the outcast, those that no one loved, the incurably ill, the elderly and the orphans, both Catholic and Buddhist.

Fr. Shea's work with AIDS victims began around 1998. Initially, it was only with adults. Many people living with AIDS were banished from their villages. Their families and long-time neighbours and friends wanted nothing to do with them, out of fear and ignorance. They were forced to leave their homes and to live in hovels in the jungle. In keeping with their mission of charity, Fr. Shea and the Redemptorists brought them food, medicine, compassion, love, and the Word of God.

Often the infected husbands died before the wives, leaving them with no way to support themselves and their children. When employers found out they had AIDS, the women lost what jobs they had. In many cases, they were too weak to work their regular field or factory jobs.

As the parents died, the question was who would care for the children left behind. The families, even grandparents, wanted nothing to do with the children, whether they had the HIV virus or not. Just being the child of an AIDS parent was enough for people to turn their backs and leave them to fend for themselves, regardless of how small and vulnerable they might be.

Some relatives were eventually encouraged to take the child, if the Redemptorists paid for their care and school expenses, and this evolved into the Outreach Program. Other children who were not so lucky began to arrive at Fr. Shea's door and soon after that, he founded Sarnelli House.

However, he could never have known the extent of his work with HIV/AIDS patients and exactly what God had in store for him, particularly when faced with the many sick children - toddlers and babies who were HIV positive or had developed AIDS. These are the tiniest of the AIDS victims. There were also children brought in by their dying mothers, by other family members or by the Thai Social Services Department. Some had been born in prison, others found wandering the streets, going house to house begging for food. One was found abandoned alongside the road, one found in the town garbage dump. Several young girls were rescued from a life of prostitution, and even if they had a home, they would not have been allowed to attend the public schools or play with other children. When they arrived into Fr Mike’s care, they were confused, frightened and withdrawn, but with love and attention they soon settled into their new houses and the work to give them a peaceful and loving home began.

SCOPE OF OPERATIONS

Sarnelli House is both the umbrella name for all of the projects overseen by Fr Mike Shea in three parishes and beyond, and also the name of one of the houses under his care. The houses are divided based on age and gender and all contain children living with HIV and also children living without the virus. The exception is House of Hope which is for toddlers, both boys and girls. All figures are accurate as of May 2019.

These projects include:

1. Sarnelli House in the village of Don Wai – home to 27 grade school and junior high school boys.

2. Nazareth House (Don Wai) – home to older teenage girls attending senior high schools or vocational colleges in the city of Nongkhai. There are 17 girls living at Nazareth House.

3. Gary and Janet Smith  (Don Wai) - home to 11 teenage boys, with some going to school, others away on work experience and some working on Jomp’s farm.

4. St Patrick’s Boys Home in the village of Pi Si Tong – home to 15 kindergarten and early grade school boys.

5. Jan and Oscar House (Pi Si Tong) - home to 14 grade school girls.

6. House of Hope (Pi Si Tong) – home to babies and toddlers, 15 children in total.

7. Our Lady of Refuge Home for Girls in the village of Don Wai – home to 26 high school girls.

8. Outreach Program – home visiting and support for poor families living with HIV/AIDS in the community including education grants for their children, food program, milk formula program and weekly clinic.

There are currently 22 teenagers and young adults studying away at high school, vocational colleges and universities around the north-east of Thailand, as well as a handful in Bangkok.

Funding these projects is entirely Fr Mike Shea’s responsibility, although Nongkhai Provincial Hospital and Sirinagarind Hospital in KonKaen have between them, taken on the provision of the Anti Retro Viral (ARV) medications for the children living at Sarnelli House.

There  are other continuous commitments such as meeting the payroll of at least 60 caring, dedicated, competent and tireless staff at all the projects, maintenance of buildings, vehicles, provision of food, school and university fees and school uniforms and just about anything else that comes up.

HOUSES

1. Sarnelli House (Don Wai)

Sarnelli House is a house for boys attending Grade school. Most of the boys are aged between 6 and 14. It houses boys both with and without HIV/AIDS. It was built with money that was graciously donated by the Redemptorist's Priests Foundation of Thailand, and was officially opened in October of 2000. It is located in the shaded rural village of Don Wai.

Most days at Sarnelli House are happy, filled with boys’ games, laughter, good meals, prayer, and love. The children are cared for by loving housemothers at this peaceful and quiet bamboo surrounded facility. Sarnelli House can accommodate up to 50 kids and is currently the home to 34 boys. It features 2 large dormitories, a kitchen, laundry facilities, a dining area, an undercover pavilion, as well as a large shaded yard complete with play equipment. And at any time you're guaranteed to see a little smiling boy peddling around on a small bike, any number bouncing around on a trampoline or more getting ready to play football on the nearby fields.

All of the boys attend Rosario Vittaya School, situated about 15 minutes away in the village of Viengkhuk. The boys clamber into their truck shortly after 7am each morning and trundle along to their school where classes run from 8am to 4pm. In the evenings, they do their homework in their large classroom, under the watchful eye of the evening staff.

Some children have started school late and struggle with their development due to neglect or AIDS related illnesses they might have had as younger children. 15 of the boys are HIV positive, infected from their mothers at birth. These children are on Anti Retro Viral (ARV) medications that were started by Fr. Michael Shea and taken over later by the public hospital in Nongkhai and university hospital in Khon Kaen. The children are now healthy and happy like any children their age.

2. Nazareth House (Don Wai)

Nazareth House was built in 2007 to house the girls who have HIV/AIDS and who are becoming teenagers. Since then, the identity of the residents has changed a little. Nowadays, it houses girls who have completed Junior High School, and girls who have HIV live together with girls who do not. It is located within walking distance to Sarnelli House and has 10 bedrooms, a kitchen, a laundry, a basketball court and a play ground. The girls living here are given more responsibility and independence and continue to attend school but usually in Nong Khai. Most of the girls here attend Vocational Colleges, studying Architecture, Computers, Nutrition and Hospitality. There are also some girls attending two very good Senior High Schools. These girls have aspirations of going to university in the next few years.

Many of the young women living there have grown up together so there are some very close friendships, but also typical teenage moodiness and dramas! These girls help out at rice planting and harvesting time and some are learning to bake and cook. A number of the girls living at Nazareth House are the victims of rape.

3. St Patrick’s Boys Home (Pi Si Tong)

St. Patrick's is located in the village of Pi Si Tong, which is a small farming and fishing village with a population of approximately 114 families, located a short distance away from the village of Don Wai and Sarnelli House.

Construction of St. Patrick's started in the spring of 2001, after Fr. Mike received major donations supporting the project from the Marist Mission Centre, Australia. The main building is a 2-story structure large enough to support approximately 25 kids. There is a laundry facility on site as well as two apartment rooms for the live in staff. The facility also includes two large fishponds, a slowly developing banana and fruit orchard, numerous rice paddies, and a large yard for the kids to seek out adventure. On October 27, 2001, the building and the grounds were blessed.

St. Patrick’s is currently home to a noisy bunch of boys attending kindergarten and early grade school. It is a fun and joyous house, looking out on to a basketball court and a garden with climbing frames and swings. The boys are always on the go, only stopping to eat, use the toilet (sometimes) or to complain about someone taking something they had been playing with. St. Patrick's is alongside the Jan & Oscar House for grade school girls so the grounds are always a fun and entertaining place to visit.

4. The House of Hope (Pi Si Tong)

The House of Hope was built with the idea of providing a home for children and babies ill from TB and other opportunistic infections associated with HIV/AIDS. Here they would receive special treatment until they recovered. Father Chuck Beierwaltes and Father Dave Polek, two Redemptorists from the Midwest USA, contacted friends, and soon donations were gathered to build the "House of Hope" in 2003, in the village of Pi Si Tong, a mile from Sarnelli House. This work was carried out at House of Hope, but is now being carried out by Sarnelli House where a trained nurse and assistant nurses care for the sick children.

The House of Hope has now been rebuilt as a nursery for babies and toddlers. The new 2 story building (pictured) was opened and blessed on April 26, 2008. It has a fully enclosed wading pool, a large yard and plenty of room for young children to explore and grow healthy. Donations given to Father Paddy Power for his furniture work has helped furnish the House of Hope.

There are currently 15 babies and toddlers being lovingly cared for at House of Hope. Some of these toddlers have come to House of Hope within hours of being born at Nongkhai Hospital. Their mothers, finding out that they themselves had HIV did not want their babies and so they were given to Father Shea.

Rules for visiting the babies at HOUSE OF HOPE

Visitors and guests are requested to comply with the following:

• Shoes must be removed prior to entering the babies room (no exception).
• Before touching or holding children, please wash and clean hands.
• Personal belongings are to be left outside of the babies’ room (misplaced and/or lost property must be under the visitor’s and guest’s direct responsibility).
• People who are unwell and not in good health should not enter into babies’ room.
• Foods and sweets are not allowed in the babies’ room, prior approval should be obtained from person(s) in charge of babies’ room.

5. Our Lady of Refuge Home for Girls (Don Wai)

In April of 1999, Fr. Mike had taken in 3 orphaned children; he purchased the building that would become Our Lady of Refuge, Home for Girls in Viengkhuk. He had received donations from German charity Kindermissionswerk, as well as other private donors. Our Lady of Refuge Home for Girls is located near the ever-changing shoreline of the Mekong River in the small city of Viengkhuk, it is a short 5 minute drive from the nearby villages of Pi Si Tong and Don Wai, home to St. Patrick's Boys Home and Sarnelli House. Rosario Vittaya School, where all of the girls receive a quality Catholic education, is conveniently located directly across the road from Our Lady of Refuge Home for Girls. The house was initially a small and humble 2-story building but was renovated and expanded.

(Old Viengkhuk house)

In October of 2001 after St. Patrick's Boys Home was opened Our Lady of Refuge, Viengkhuk became strictly a girls' orphanage. Several of the girls who have been abused were given to us by the Provincial Courts in Nongkhai to raise and educate. The mission of Our Lady of Refuge Home for Girls is to provide a healthy, safe, and supportive environment for orphaned and abandoned young girls to grow up in. There are girls with HIV living here together with girls who do not have the virus.

In late 2017, the Thai government decided to widen the highway running adjacent to this house in Viengkhuk. This was done without any consultation or compensation and led to the removal of the irrigation channel which allowed the monsoon rain to run from the grounds and also the safety ditch, which offered security from any vehicles. The ground would now be more likely to flood every rainy season and any car coming off the road at the bend would come very close to hitting the girls' dormitory. As a result, and with a heavy heart, Fr. Shea had no choice but to vacate the Viengkhuk house. A new home for the girls was built on a small, 2 rai parcel of land in Don Wai, next door to Nazareth House and behind Sarnelli House for boys. The new house was opened and blessed in August 2018 and is now home to 26 junior and senior high school girls. It is a very happy home and the girls love the new, airy dormitory and open communal eating area. They like to practise weaving and sewing and it is a great house to visit. The old Viengkhuk house was 7 km and the girls are now a lot closer to the other children, and can play games on the sports field every evening or in the hall during the rainy season.

6. The Jan & Oscar House (Pi Si Tong)

The Jan and Oscar House was built in 2009 and its first residents, in May of that year, were 14 of the older Sarnelli boys. This gleaming new residence for orphaned and abandoned children came about thanks to the amazing generosity of the Jan and Oscar Foundation (Jan & Oscar were two young Swiss boys who drowned in the 2004 Tsunami in Phuket, Thailand several years ago, and their mother set up a foundation in their name, and gave the grant to build this house), and the Rotary Club Pully Switzerland.

At the start of 2015, the teenage boys moved out to the Gary & Janet Smith House on Jomp’s farm and the little Grade School girls, who had been living at St. Patrick’s House moved into their new abode. The Jan & Oscar House is currently home to 23 girls aged between 8 and 13, with and without HIV and the air is filled with laughter, shrieks and chatter. It is an uplifting place, with the young madams full of gossip and curiosity but still young enough to be sweet little girls.

The girls of Jan & Oscar start their days doing chores, sweeping and helping in the herb garden and then fill their free time playing in the playground, jumping on the trampoline, riding their bikes and sometimes skipping or playing sport. There is a swimming pool behind their house, a kind donation form a US friend of Sarnelli, and the girls love their time in it during the school holidays, looking on enviously when it’s the turn of another house to swim. Once they have competed Grade school, the girls of Jan & Oscar will move to live at Our Lady of Refuge Home in Viengkhuk.

7. Gary & Janet Smith House (Jomp's Farm, Don Wai)

The Gary and Janet Smith House was built on Jomp’s farm in 2014 and the first boys moved in there in October of the same year. It is located about a kilometre or so from Sarnelli House for boys. The original plan had been to use this new accommodation as a place for some of the boys who might have struggled out in the real world, due to learning difficulties or behavioural problems. But, due to an increased intake of girls during 2014, it was decided to move all boys over 14 into the Gary and Janet Smith House. At the moment, 16 teenage boys share a bright and airy dormitory on the second floor and eat, study and watch TV downstairs. The house is surrounded by fish ponds and rice fields and the quiet environment seems brings an air of calm to the place. There is an adjoining study room, kindly sponsored by Irene and Manu Hiralal and the boys recently helped to build their own little gym. Football is played on a concrete court behind the study room and it’s often a bit of battle to get them into the study room before they play football!

Since the departure of Sr Jit, the previous house mother of the boys for many years, it had proved to be difficult to find someone to supervise the house, but the recent arrival of Jack and Em, a local married couple has been a great success. Jack is well regarded by all of the boys and runs a tight ship, ensuring punctuality, cleanliness and respect. The residents do include some of the boys for whom the house was originally intended and they, no longer attending school, help at the farm, which has pigs, cattle, fowl and fish as well as 28 acres of paddy fields. The boys have their own tuk tuk to travel to and from the farm or the other houses and the three designated drivers take their roles very seriously.

OUTREACH PROGRAM

The Outreach Programme is a programme to visit HIV/AIDS patients in their homes. Fr. Mike Shea started this outreach work with three novitiates from the Redemptorists Novitiate in Nongkhai as his staff, and visited the first adult AIDS patient group in Don Wai.

Fr Mike Shea and three novices at the beginning working for HIV/AIDS people

The Outreach Programme is growing every year and is now overseen by Ms. Kate Introna. It covers five provinces of Northeast Thailand and sees approximately 100 families. It provides for the primary needs of families affected by HIV/AIDS by supplying medicines, food and money for educating the children. There is a weekly trip to visit families, in some cases delivering food and milk formula. Kate also runs a clinic on a Friday morning which is attended by people with HIV from the local villages.
