Happy Valentine's Day to all!

We had a great Valentine’s Day party for the kids. Only Ole and I were here; no volunteers or guests. The kids wanted egg noodles with red pork, etc. They also had cake from our bakery, pop and ice cream. They sang and danced on their own. They also had these stickum colorful hearts. Ole and my T-shirts are glittering from these decals. The wash lady will not be amused.

This month, I celebrate my 50th anniversary of arrival in Thailand. I can still see the three priests who picked me up at the old Don Muang airport. Larry Patin was in language school. He was ordained a year ahead of me. Eddie O’Connor was two years ahead of me, and Roger Godbout was 50 years old then; one of the four founding Fathers of the mission in Thailand. The sun was settling behind them. They had their white habits on, which we always wore in those days. All three are dead and gone. I hope to see them again when I leave this world, waiting for me again!

We have another really cold snap this week; the temperature hovered above zero Celsius for a few days. They had snow in Laos, north of us. The cold season held off for two months or more, but it came on with a vengeance. We had six days of this the first time a few weeks ago, but at least we did not begin planting our corn and beans. I really felt sorry for small children and old folks. We got out blanket and coats to all that we could, but there are so many old and poor in this area, that we could not cover all the villages.

The activities, confusion and frantic work on year end reports are done. The urchins are back in school, praise Jesus, and we now have time to take stock of what we have accomplished during the past year, and what we need to do to rectify some mistakes. This is the Year of the Monkey, whatever that means. There were aspects and accidents, etc., of the past year we hope are behind us, never to return.

The older kids, who are ready to enter college next year, are bearing down on their studies so as to get decent grades. Some are already taking entrance exams. Six girls from our house in Viengkuk, who are finishing up junior high, are to be moved to the big leagues! They will move to Nazareth House in Don Wai and go to senior high school or vocational school in the town of Nongkhai, about 15 miles north of us. We have no boys this year from Sarnelli House who will move on to senior high school.

At the House of Hope, our latest three mothers are making decisions as well. One girl, who has the AIDS virus, decided to take her baby and move in with her mother. We will help her financially to get a job so as to support herself and her baby. I think she has a boyfriend; the sperm donor for her baby. The other two girls, both in junior high and both nicknamed “Pla” (Fish; we call them Big Fish and Little Fish) will hopefully switch schools and continue their studies when school opens again in May. We will support them during their further studies. One girl, 14, has no one except a great grandmother, who is really old, sickly and frail. Neither of these girls want to raise their babies. They are both too immature and young to raise their kids anyway. We have another baby coming in a few weeks. It will be born of a blind woman with AIDS who used to be with us, named Tadum.

On the farm, we have too many fat pigs and have to start selling some. We had plenty of buyers, since Chinese New Year was celebrated. Our cows are beginning to give birth to new calves, and the first one born this year was a heifer, which is good. We have not as yet began fishing our ponds, because thekids are still eating fish we took from the ponds and froze, late last year. We might have to sell fish as well. Our ponds are well stocked.

Late last year, we had trouble with the tax man. The Royal Tax people want to start taxing money coming from the U.S. to Sarnelli House. I have kept money back since October. I had to fill out all kinds of forms, etc. I did tell the pig eyed lady with the summons that the government does not help us with one shekel, and we are officially a part of the Nongkhai Welfare Department. I hope these oafs back off and leave us alone.

Again, thank you for your generosity and kindness toward our kids. Right now, we have 164 of them. The numbers drop when kids graduate from college, and then surge up again when wee ones are dropped off at Sarnelli House, to begin a new life. May the Good God bless you!
