HAPPY THAI NEW YEAR!!
April 13-16 is Thai New Year, and people go to the temple or to Mass and then begin pouring water on the elderly and throwing water on everyone else. The hot season is in the forties already (Celsius) and we are in drought. The government has ordered that only one day be designated for throwing water, but it remains to be seen if kids are going to adhere to that rule.
We currently are raising children from the age of 2 months to 20 years; about 165 of the little pikers. A few of our young folk are graduating, and moving on. One girl will go to work in Japan, having studied Japanese and attended their vocational school here. Another is now a nurse. I really feel my age, when I see kids who came to me mere babies or little folk; now graduating into college and graduating into the world. The college graduates are full of joy and hope, with a tinge of apprehensiveness. Good jobs are hard to find, and kids that came beaten down and with feelings of rejection and outright hostility from relatives and neighbors, find themselves hard put to muster the fire it takes to come out swinging. I watch, and hope, and worry and pray. I know God will take care of them. I just don’t want them hurt anymore; like than they were in the past. I know I am an old codger and get kind of maudlin when I see them sail off into society and freedom and try to learn the wiles of the world. Most do really well; but some come back, broken and confused and worrying they will be labeled as losers.
We are busy painting Sarnelli House, with it’s adjacent St. Michael’s dorm and sick bay. Years ago, I had painted those three buildings lime green and dark green. The kids began complaining immediately, saying it looked like a prison. This time, I let Gung and Jeep choose the colors, and it is a sand color with darker touch ups. It looks really nice. We also built another office building, so as to accommodate both people and filing cabinets.
We want to build a building at the 6 acre field for a few of the boys. We have four acres of good rice paddy; plus a big, deep fish pond. A couple months ago, the older kids went and cleared about two acres of brush, and we found good soil. We can plant watermelon, squash, snap beans, etc., there. There is no electricity though. We are trying to figure out how to solve this problem; our generator, which could charge batteries for the house for the boys. Or solar panels. Or try to run electricity from our farm (3 phase) to the site, which is about 300 meters or so.
One week ago, the Welfare department brought in a mother and two sons. She has been suffering from AIDS for 8 years. She was banished from her village with just a little bundle of clothes. They took shelter in a Buddhist monastery, but were ejected on Holy Thursday because of her illness. I hired the poor woman to work as a laundress and send her boys to school. She is a polite, well spoken lady, but looks a tad hideous from the ravages of AIDS.
Our latest arrival is a 16 year old girl who was raped by her natural father. He is in jail, but the girl can never go back home. Here, as in other places, it is always the girl’s fault, no matter how young or how defenseless.
Here’s hoping winter passes quickly and a lovely, warm verdant spring moves in quickly. May the good Lord bless all of you.

สวัสดีวันปีใหม่ (ไทย)
วันที่ 13 ถึง 16 เมษายนนี้ เป็นวันสงกรานต์ ปีใหม่ไทย ชาวพุทธก็จะไปวัด ส่วนชาวคริสต์ก็จะไปร่วมมิสซา ต่อจากนั้นจะมีการรดน้ำผู้ใหญ่ และสาดน้ำกัน หน้าร้อนนี้อุณหภูมิสูงถึง 40 องศา และเราเจอปัญหาแห้งแล้วด้วย รัฐบาลประกาศให้มีการสาดน้ำกันแค่วันเดียว ซึ่งหน้าจับตามองว่าเด็ก ๆ จะถือระเบียบนี้กันหรือเปล่า
ปัจจุบันพวกเรามีเด็กในความดูแลตั้งแต่อายุ 2 เดือน จนถึง 20 ปี มีจำนวน 165 คน เด็กจบมหาวิทยาลับมีสองสามคน เด็กผู้หญิงคนหนึ่งกำลังจะไปทำงานที่ประเทศญี่ปุ่น เขาได้เรียนภาษาญี่ปุ่นที่วิทยาลัยอาชีวะที่หนองคาย เด็กหญิงอีกคนหนึ่งกำลังจะจบพยาบาล พ่อรู้สึกว่าแก่ขึ้นเลยเมื่อได้เห็นเด็กเหล่านี้จากทีแรกเขาเป็นทารก แต่ตอนนี้กำลังจะเรียนจบแล้ว และกำลังจะไปใช้ชีวิตข้างนอก เด็กที่เรียนจบวิทยาลัยรู้สึกดีใจและเต็มไปด้วยความหวัง แต่งานดี ๆ นั้นก็หายาก เด็กที่เคยถูกทำร้ายหรือปฏิเสธจากครอบครัว หรือเพื่อนบ้าน รู้สึกยากที่จะเข้าไปแข่งขันกับโลกความเป็นจริง พ่อคอยดู หวัง เป็นห่วง และสวดให้ พ่อแค่ไม่อยากให้เขารู้สึกเจ็บปวดเพิ่มขึ้นอีก เหมือนอย่างที่เขาเคยโดนในอดีต พ่อรู้ว่าพ่อเป็นเหมือนคนแก่ที่ขี้เป็นห่วง เมื่อเห็นลูกหลานต้องออกไปเผชิญกับความโลก และอิสระ และพยายามเรียนรู้กับโลกที่มีอุบายมากมาย แต่เด็กที่ออกไปส่วนมากก็สามารถอยู่ได้ แต่บางคนก็กลับมาหาเรา เขาสับสน และกลุ้มใจที่ถูกล้อเลียนว่าไปไหนไม่รอด
เรากำลังยุ่งกับการทาสีบ้านซารนิลลี่ เฮาส์ หลายปีก่อนพ่อให้เขาทำสีเขียวอ่อนตัดกับเขียวแก่ เด็ก ๆ เห็นทีแรกก็บอกว่าเหมือนคุก คราวนี้พ่อให้กุ้งและจิ๊บเป็นคนเลือกสี เขาเลือกสีน้ำตาลอ่อนตัดกับสีน้ำตาลเข้ม ซึ่งดูสวยดี เราได้สร้างห้องทำงานเพิ่มเพื่อเจ้าหน้าที่ และสำหรับตู้เก็บเอกสารด้วย
เราต้องการสร้างบ้านอีกหนึ่งหลังในที่ 12 ไร่ สำหรับเด็กผู้ชายโต ที่ตรงนั้นมี 8 ไร่เป็นนาข้าว มีสระน้ำเลี้ยงปลาได้ เมื่อสองเดือนก่อนเด็กโตได้ไปถางเนื้อที่ด้านหน้าประมาณ 4 ไร่ ปรากฏว่ามีดินดี ซึ่งอาจจะปลูกแตงโม น้ำเต้า ถั่ว หรืออย่างอื่นได้ แต่ปัญหาคือยังไม่มีไฟฟ้าในที่ดินนั้น เรากำลังดูว่าจะแก้ปัญหาอย่างไร อาจจะใช้เครื่องปั่นไฟ ที่เก็บไฟในแบตเตอรี่ได้ หรือจะเป็นแผงโซล่าเซลล์ หรือจะต่อจากฟาร์มของเราที่ห่างประมาณ 300 เมตร หรืออย่างอื่นซึ่งกำลังดูความเป็นไปได้อยู่
เมื่อสัปดาห์ก่อน เจ้าหน้าที่จากบ้านพักเด็กแรกรับของรัฐบาล พาแม่กับลูกชายสองคนมาหาเรา ผู้เป็นแม่เป็นผู้ติดเชื้อมาได้ 8 ปีแล้ว เขาถูกไล่ออกจากหมู่บ้าน มีเสื้อผ้าอยู่ไม่กี่ชุด มาอาศัยอยู่ในวัดพุทธ แต่ก็ต้องถูกไล่อีกเพราะว่าเป็นผู้ติดเชื้อเมื่อวันพฤหัสศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่ ผ่านมา พ่อได้รับเขาและจ้างให้เป็นคนซักผ้าที่ศูนย์ และส่งลูกชายทั้งสองเข้าโรงเรียน แม่คนนี้เป็นคนสุภาพ พูดจาไพเราะ แต่รูปร่างดูน่าเกลียดนิดหน่อยจากสภาพของการติดเชื้อ
เด็กที่เรารับล่าสุดเป็นเด็กหญิงอายุ 16 ปี เธอถูกพ่อแท้ ๆ ข่มขืน ตอนนี้ผู้เป็นพ่อถูกจับขังไว้แล้ว แต่เด็กคนนี้ไม่สามารถอยู่ที่บ้านได้ เพราะเด็กเหมือนมีความผิด ไม่ว่าเขาจะอายุน้อยเพียงใด หรือป้องกันตัวเองไม่ได้
พ่อหวังว่าฤดูร้อนคงจะผ่านไปอย่างรวดเร็ว และฤดูฝนจะมาถึงอย่างรวดเร็วเช่นกัน
